Poipet
A border city between Cambodia and Thailand, Poipet is a usual destination for circuits going from Phnom Penh to Bangkok.
Its geographical location has contributed to its fast development creating an original and exciting journey.
While most travelers only pass through, the city can provide the savvy and curious with some fascinating insights into normal Cambodian people’s lives. Ever a transport hub, Poipet hosts the western railhead of Cambodia’s defunct but regenerating network which once connected to the functioning Thai network.
The town is relatively easily covered on foot, for those who wish to explore it. Hotels are within walking distance of customs; though on a hot day, you and your luggage may appreciate a motodop (motorbike taxi), which will take you to any part of Poipet.
It is a key crossing point between the two countries, and also extremely popular as a gambling destination as gambling is popular, but illegal in Thailand. There is a strip of casinos and hotels between the Cambodian and Thai passport control counters, enabling Thais and other foreigners to gamble in Cambodia without needing to go through Cambodian immigration. In Cambodia, gambling is illegal for Cambodian citizens but not for holders of foreign passports. There is another border on the Cambodian side of this strip area that one needs to pass before being free to travel within the rest of the country.
At the Thai-Cambodian border crossing between Aranyaprathet, Thailand, and Poipet, Cambodia, hundreds of tourists cross each day (mostly from Thailand into Cambodia) and scamming them is a major industry in the city. If you plan on crossing this border, it’s important to understand some of the ways that locals will try and get you to part with your money. However, don’t let that stop you from crossing the Thai-Cambodian border at Poipet. With a little knowledge and preparation, you can avoid many of the hassles that come from crossing here.
