Pakse
Pakse is in Southern Laos, and the 2nd most populous in the country and an ideal base with its relaxing atmosphere on the Mekong and Sedone Rivers, friendly locals, ubiquitous riverside restaurants and bars, and numerous massage clinics.
Wat Luang is the biggest and most beautiful temple and the best place to see a monk alm giving ceremony.
It is a major transport and commercial hub for southern Laos so many people make it their base and day-trip to Champassak and the surrounding temple complexes. The colonial buildings lend an air of old-world charm.
Close to Pakse are various ecotourism projects where elephant treks, birdwatching and homestays can easily be arranged.
