Vientiane

The capital of Laos. Compared to the hectic, bustling capitals in other Southeast Asian countries, Vientiane’s relaxing atmosphere makes it feel like the small town it is.

Today Vientiane is the largest city in Laos, with an estimated population of 210,000 in the city itself. Vientiane is best viewed as a comfortable transit point for other places in Laos, or as a recuperative stop on the way out.

As Laos has opened up to foreign investment and tourism, Vientiane has undergone vast changes.

One of the most enjoyable views in Vientiane is the sunset over the Mekong River. You may also be able to watch a performance of traditional Lao music and dance at one of the riverside salas.

Possibly the world’s most laid-back capital city. Cut off from the outside world for much of the modern period, its colonial heritage remains largely intact.

Vientiane’s appeal lies in its largely preserved fusion of Southeast Asian and French colonial culture.

Most of the interesting buildings in Vientiane are of religious significance.

Vientiane, still feels like a sleepy city with relaxed charm, tree-lined boulevards, beautiful temples and colourful markets.
