Bamboo Artisanry of Hoi An by Bike and Boat
Combine an off-the-beaten-track bicycle ride with a glimpse into the traditional arts of Hoi An. The town of Hoi An has a reputation for its distinctive arts and crafts. It is home to many factories and workshops where the ancient techniques first introduced by the ancestors of the town’s families are still being followed to this day. These exquisite handicrafts are produced using local materials such as bamboo, wood and Vietnamese fabrics. Hop on your bike and cycle to the pier. Then, along with your bicycle, board a boat for a cruise to Cam Kim Island. Ride through the lush surroundings stopping at some of the authentic workshops to see how wooden boats, traditional basket boats, and beautiful carpets are made. From here take another cruise to the east of Hoi An and visit Cam Thanh village where endless nipa palm forests cover hectares of land. These abundant forests provide the locals with bamboo, an essential raw material from which they build houses as well as producing beautiful handicrafts and even sturdy bamboo bicycles. Visit a bamboo workshop and try your hand at this popular craft before cycling back to the old town.
Walking tour around Hoi An
Hoi An is a picturesque riverside town south of Danang. Known as Faifo to early western traders, it was one of South East Asia’s major international ports during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Now, this beautifully preserved historic city is best seen on foot. See the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge the first bridge on this site was constructed in 1593 by the Japanese community of Hoi An to link the town with the Chinese quarters across the stream. The bridge was provided with a roof so it could be used as a shelter from rain and sun. Visit the nearby Sa Huynh Museum, which contains exhibitions from the earliest period of Hoi An’s history.
Stroll to the Tran Family Chapel, a house for worshipping ancestors that was built about 200 years ago with donations from family members. The Tran family traces its origins to China and moved to Vietnam around 1700. The architecture of the building reflects the influence of Chinese and Japanese styles. Visit the Phuoc Kien Assembly Hall, a Chinese pagoda built around 1690 and then restored and enlarged in 1900. It is typical of the Chinese clans that were established in the Hoi An area. The temple is dedicated to Thien Hau Thanh Mau (Goddess of the Sea and Protector of Sailors and Fishermen). Finally, visit a lantern making workshop, one of many in Hoi An. The framework for the lanterns is made beforehand and clients can observe locals adorning silk cloth on the lantern.
Experience a coffee roastery class
Start at the small and cosy coffee shop in the town, learning about Vietnamese coffee and the whole process of coffee production, from bean to cup. Watch as one of roasters describes and demonstrates the way coffee is roasted, then listen as a roaster/barista explains the history, process and versatility of coffee. Sample a variety of house-roasted coffee to round out your experience – Overnight in Hoi An
