Mawlamyine
Mawlamyine is in Southeastern Myanmar. Mawlamyine is the fourth largest city in Myanmar with a population of 326,000. Captured by the British in 1826 during the First Anglo-Burmese War and the capital from 1827 to 1852. The population is quite large but the city itself feels like a small town, making it pleasant to walk around.
Enormous Pa Auk Taw Ya Monastery, a tranquil meditation centre with friendly people. Kyaik Tan Lan Pagoda. Up on the hill, is one of the best vantage points in town to see the sunset.
A plethora of splendid colonial period architecture remains. Attractions, ranging from beaches to caves.
The city between the river and the small ridge of hills crowned by several prominent pagodas. An attractive, leafy, tropical town with a ridge of stupa-capped hills on one side and the sea on the other.
A lively waterfront with fishing boats, river taxis and passenger ferries. Departing and arriving from all points, and a couple of great markets close by.
The gateway to the long, narrow ribbon of southern, peninsular Burma.
