Taunggyi

Taunggyi is the capital of Shan State in Eastern Myanmar. Home to a large number of traditional ethnic tribes.

Taunggyi is best known for the annual Fire Balloon festival. Held for one week near the beginning of November each year. Hot air paper balloons in the shape of various animals floating over the town.

Taunggyi is a trading post with its markets filled with Chinese and Thai goods.

Taunggyi is a pine clad hill station which provides a cool break from the heat of the plains. Taunggyi is 1,436 m above sea level.

The Central Market located in the centre of town is the best spot to see colourful hill tribe people. Local handicraft of basket making is popular.

Like in most of Myanmar the city has many monasteries.
