Tanjung Puting National Park is a national park in Indonesia located in the southeast part of West Kotawaringin Regency in the Indonesian province of Central Kalimantan. The nearest main town is the capital of the Regency, Pangkalan Bun. Tanjung Puting is the largest and most diverse protected example of extensive coastal tropical heath and peat swamp forest which used to cover much of southern Borneo. The best known animals in Tanjung Puting are the orangutans, made famous through the long-term efforts of the Borneo Orangutan Research and Conservation Program, based at the landmark Camp Leakey research station.
An orangutan in prime living conditions can live for up to 60 years. When on the ground, orangutans walk on all fours, using their palms or fists. Unlike the African apes, orangutans are not built morphologically to be knuckle-walkers. From the age of thirteen years (usually in captivity) past the age of thirty, males may develop flanges and large size. Orangutans have tremendous strength, which enables them to hang upside-down from branches for long periods of time to retrieve fruit and eat young leaves. For the first few years of his/her life, a young orangutan holds tight to his/her mother’s body as she moves through the forest canopy.
The main threat to the survival of orangutan populations in the wild is the massive expansion of palm oil plantations in Borneo and Sumatra. Palm oil is the most widely used vegetable oil in the world. Surging global demand for palm oil has fueled massive forest destruction throughout Indonesia and Malaysia. Half the packaged food products found on supermarket shelves now contain palm oil.
Rimba Orangutan Borneo Eco lodge is perched over the gently flowing Sekonyer River on the edge of the Tanjung Puting National Park where you will see Borneo Orangutan. It is remote – only accessible by traditional Klotok boat. The property feels as though it is straight out of a movie set, with exotic covered boardwalks connecting the rooms with the restaurant and social spaces. From your comfortable room, you’ll wake up each day to birdsong and you may hear the plaintive cry of Gibbons and enjoy the resident Macaque monkey troop.
Pangkalan Bun or Pangkalanbuun, is a city on Borneo in Indonesia. Its typical riverside life together with heritage sites along the banks of the river makes Pangkalan Bun special. It serves as gateway to visitors who wish to venture into the exotic Tanjung Puting National Park wanting to see the Borneo Orangutan.
