LAOS ADVENTURES

Landlocked Laos borders Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar. Laos is a breathtaking but often overlooked destination in Southeast Asia. Laos offers stellar mountainous landscapes, green rolling hills and the mighty Mekong River. As well as rich, dense forests bursting with wildlife and off the beaten track adventures.

In Laos you can, visit Buddhist monasteries, explore the Plain of Jars, relax in Luang Prabang, or float down the Mekong River in a slow-boat. The best time to go to Laos is between November and February, when the weather is cool and dry. Domestic travel is best by air, as most of the roads are not well-maintained.

Laos is relaxed and laid-back, retaining much of its century-old traditions and rural ways of life.

World Heritage

Luang Prabang in the center of northern Laos is one of the most charming and best preserved towns in Southeast Asia. There are 34 Buddhist temples among Luang Prabang’s colonial and Chinese architectures, set with a backdrop of lush green mountains. The Mekong River frames the town’s western border, and it remains an important commercial and recreational transportation link.

The Wat Phou Complex and the surrounding Champasack Heritage Landscape is 500 kilometers south of Vientiane. Located on the Mekong River in the province of Champasack. Wat Phou is an excellent example of early classical Khmer architecture, dating from the 7th – 12th century AD. At the foot of Wat Phou is the ancient city of Shestupura. First settled in the 5th century AD, it is believed to be the oldest urban settlement in Southeast Asia.

Climate

Most of the year is hot and humid. Laos enjoys a tropical climate with two distinct seasons. The rainy season is from the beginning of May to the end of September, and the dry season is from October through April. The yearly average temperature is about 28 degrees Celsius, rising to a maximum of 38 degrees Celsius during April and May.

Flora & Fauna

Laos has one of the most pristine natural landscapes in Southeast Asia. An estimated half of its woodlands consist of primary forest, in particular the tropical rainforest. Unlike the vegetation that grows in the climate of Europe and the United States, tropical rainforest is composed of three vegetative layers. The top layer features single-trucked, high-reaching trees called dipterocarps. The middle canopy consists of hardwood such as teak. Beneath, small trees, grass and sometimes bamboo can be found.

National Protected Area

The 20 National Protected Areas (NPA) cover nearly 14% of the country. Containing large areas of tropical monsoon forest, diverse wildlife populations and bizarre karst limestone formations riddled with caves. Coupled with an abundance of extraordinary things to see. Although most NPA are remote and difficult to reach, there are many ecotourism activities on offer. Such as trekking, rafting, bird watching and camping allowing you to experience the country’s magnificent natural and cultural diversity.
